Spatial9 has joined the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), the industry consortium that develops open, royalty-free standards for video, audio and other media. As a member, Spatial9 contributes to AOMedia's work on open audio, including the Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF) specification that Eclipsa Audio is built on.

"We're excited to welcome Spatial9, reflecting our joint commitment to improve open media in new and cutting-edge ways," said Matt Frost, Chairperson of AOMedia. "We're excited to collaborate with Spatial9 to advance open web media experiences and accelerate the adoption of open web media standards, bringing cinematic-quality 3D immersive audio to today's consumer electronics."

"Joining AOMedia allows us to contribute to open standards that will shape the future of audio across streaming, gaming, AR/VR, and broadcasting," said Luiz Zanardo, Co-Founder and CEO of Spatial9.

What IAMF is

The open IAMF and Eclipsa Audio ecosystem (Spatial9 joining AOMedia)
Where Spatial9 sits in the open immersive audio ecosystem.

IAMF is an open container format for immersive audio. It works with existing audio codecs, such as Opus, AAC and FLAC, and describes how sound should be laid out around the listener so the same file can play on headphones, phones, TVs and soundbars. Eclipsa Audio is the consumer name for IAMF, developed by Google and Samsung, and it plays on YouTube.

Our articles on why open source matters for immersive audio and Eclipsa Audio compared with Dolby Atmos explain the format in detail. For Spatial9's earlier Eclipsa Audio work, see the AudioShake collaboration at CES 2025.
